This large tree typically grows best in low, wet, bottomland. It is fast growing and the wood can be used for furniture. The seeds are an important late winter food source for some birds and the trunk cavities provide shelter for mammals and nesting birds. Sycamore can grow to 100+ feet tall and up to 20 feet around the base of the trunk. They are very wind tolerant and make strong windbreaks.
